Presence Indication and Real-Time Converged Communications Overview logo

Presence

Knowing whether someone is available before calling them is a real business benefit. The cost of telephone tennis and voice mail tag is huge, particularly if mobile bills are involved.

Presence Benefits and Integration

Having presence integrated with a mobile smart phone or Blackberry as well as you desktop and applications means that no matter where you are, other people can see if you are in a meeting, unavailable or contactable by a particular mechanism.

Instant Messaging and Softphone

IM has the potential to be a huge business benefit, but is often discounted on “security” grounds, or because there is “no business demand”.

The business benefits that IM can bring are considerable, according to Gartner

Bob Tarzey, an analyst at Quocirca, said, "As an additional communications channel, instant messaging can deliver huge benefits to businesses if managed well, providing immediate contact between employees and the external organisations they deal with.

What organisations need is a real-time collaboration architecture, which makes presence information available beyond the confines of an IM application, Gartner.

More than 80 per cent of organisations now use some form of IM, according to Ostermann Research…. many (whether they know it or not) run free internet-based IM software designed by the likes of MSN, Yahoo and AOL.

IM is increasingly being used as a vehicle for rapidly disseminating critical information to the entire enterprise, groups of users or individuals in cases such as natural catastrophes, health issues, network outages or schedule changes. In some cases, the IM network remains operational when phone or e-mail systems are down, David Mario Smith, research analyst at Gartner.

Often there is no business demand because the business has been told of the “security” concerns and that IM is for kids to chat. Some of it is. However, being able to get instant decisions, being able to contact everyone in the organisation with a single click, having something that will possibly keep working even if phones and email are down, not having to wait for some random ISP to decide to process the email, being able to take 10 seconds to confirm something is correct before you hit that critical submit button, all have significant benefit.

Secure, recorded instant messaging with full control by the enterprise of who can do what, when, how and with whom eliminates all the common arguments often put up against IM.

Straight Forward ROI Justification

Lots of professionals have hugely expensive hourly rates, so minutes saved here and there can have a dramatic impact, but even at national average rates of about £13 per hour, just 5 minutes per day saved (never mind call costs or grossed up costs of running the infrastructure and apportioning support costs and so on, purely salary) translates to over £23 per month!!! Make that a more expensive, less accessible person and the costs are enormous. Just saving part of that time (never mind other benefits) could pay for the system. Add on another £0.15 per call for mobile use and get to some really big numbers. Then there is the frustration and the feeling you could be doing something useful, so the intangible cost of morale.

Secure Encrypted Recorded Instant Messaging and Presence Information on Blackberry and other mobile devices

A recent study in the health service of the benefits of mobile working showed:

So the benefits of mobile working are well known and demonstrable.

A recent survey by RIM found an average BlackBerry user converts one hour of downtime to productive time each day and ups their overall team efficiency by 38 per cent.

If you add presence integration and secure, encrypted, recorded instant messaging you get close to the nirvana described by David Mario Smith at Gartner, “The IM client is becoming the launch pad for many types of communications channels and services,” he concluded. “Presence will extend its influence beyond IM to become an essential source of innovation for enterprise applications of the future.”

Gartner predicts Instant Messaging will be de facto tool for voice, video and text chat by the end of 2011. Presence Networks revolutionary platform started with security concerns addressed first and foremost. This coupled with integration with mobile devices, such as smart phones, BlackBerrys etc, and the option of an AJAX (web 2.0) nothing to install client, makes this revolutionary vision a viable option.
