VMware Virtual Infrastructure 3 (VI3) Overview
VMware Virtual Infrastructure 3 (VI3) is the leading Enterprise virtualisation platform. VI2 virtualizes servers, storage and networking, allowing multiple unmodified operating systems and their applications to run independently in virtual machines while sharing physical resources. Improvements reported by VMware customers include:- Increased hardware utilization by 50-70%
- Decreased hardware and software capital costs by 40%
- Decreased operating costs by 50-70% Increased server to server administrator ratio from 10:1 to 30:1
VMware DRS
VMware DRS provides dynamic resource optimization across ESX servers. Allowing you to optimise the use of your ESX servers by migrating virtual machines from one to another to ensure the best spread of load.
To quote vmware themselves:
"Align your IT infrastructure with your business goals by dynamically allocating and balancing computing resources with VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS). VMware DRS continuously monitors utilization across resource pools and intelligently allocates available resources among the virtual machines based on pre-defined rules that reflect business needs and changing priorities. When virtual machine resources are constrained, additional capacity is made available by migrating live virtual machines to a different physical server using VMware VMotion."
VMware HA
VMware HA allows the automated migration of virtual machines from a failed ESX server in the event of a failure.
HA monitors capacity continuously to ensure space is always available to restart virtual machines in the event of server failure.
HA restarts virtual machines almost instantly without human intervention on a different physical ESX server within the same resource pool.
Chooses the optimal physical ESX servers within a resource pool on which to restart virtual machines (if used in conjunction with VMware DRS).
Vmware Consolidated Backup
Vmware Consolidated Backup allows backup of your virtual machines via a proxy server, decreasing the load on your ESX server(s), also decreasing the time required. VMware Consolidated Backup is included in VMware Infrastructure Enterprise Edition and can be purchased as an add-on product to the Starter and Standard editions.VMware VI3 Summary
