Introduction
VMotion lets you move running virtual machines from one physical ESX Server to another while maintaining continuous service availability and complete transaction integrity.
VMotion is an additional feature of VMware VirtualCenter and ESX Server. It allows you to move a running virtual server transparently to the users, the virtual server never reboots. Service from the virtual server is consistent throughout the process allowing server moves with zero disruption.
VMotion allows you to do load-balancing with live servers, in real-time. Should a server suddenly become overloaded, you can move it onto a less loaded ESX server in seconds, with no loss of service.
Physical server maintenance can be done during office hours as production virtual servers can be moved onto a secondary ESX server, whilst the original ESX server is taken down for maintenance. When you are finished, the virtual servers can again be moved onto the original ESX server.
